The Coaching Skills Workshop
The 8-Step Coaching Model, developed by the Center for Management and Organization Effectiveness, serves as the centerpiece for this full-day, highly interactive skillbuilding seminar.
Objective: Learn to conduct highly effective Coaching discussions with employees, peers, and others, to influence performance and development.
Audience: Organizational leaders, executives, senior staff, managers, supervisors, anyone who has a need to coach and influence others.

- Case I – a diagnostic case processed by roleplay, to assess the participant’s current coaching style and skill level. Roleplays are private, 3-party activities, audiotaped for the participant’s benefit in receiving feedback.
- The 8-Step Coaching Model. An in-depth discussion and explanation of the CMOE 8-Step model for conducting coaching sessions.
- Step 1 – Be Supportive
- Step 2 – Define the Topic and Needs
- Step 3 – Establish Impact
- Step 4 – Initiate a Plan
- Step 5 – Get a Commitment
- Step 6 – Confront Excuses and Resistance
- Step 7 – Clarify Consequences

- Video demonstration of the 8-step Coaching model.
- Listening to Roleplay I. Participants go into groups of 3 to listen to and receive feedback from the first roleplay, overlaying the template of the 8-Step Coaching Model learned before lunch.
- Collaboration and Coaching. A discussion of four various style choices available when coaching, with an emphasis on the collaborative style.
- Case II – a customized case developed for this group. Participants will again go into roleplay settings and practice having a Coaching session. This time, they will be asked to apply the 8-Step Coaching Model in their discussions.
- Live Demo of the 8-Step Model.
- Case III – an opportunity to practice using another customized case. This allows participants to further hone and refine their coaching skills in another practice situation.
- Real case situation. Participants will develop their own coaching scenario, and will discuss it with one member of the group, who will consult as to how to apply the Coaching Model in this situation.
- Wrap up and feedback.
